Tropical Restraint

Located in West Palm Beach, Florida, this approximately 6,500 sq ft detached residence draws from the relaxed and open lifestyle of South Florida. Tropical resort living is balanced with a more refined and understated American residential character, creating a home that feels equally suited to retreat and everyday life.

A strong connection between indoors and outdoors defines the experience of the residence. Expansive glazing opens the principal living spaces towards the pool, gardens and surrounding landscape, allowing natural light and exterior views to become an integral part of the interior. Pitched ceilings and extensive timber surfaces reinforce the generous proportions of the architecture while introducing the warmth and informality associated with resort living.

The material palette is built around warm timber, darker woodwork, light-toned surfaces and large-format stone. Contrasts between light and dark are carefully controlled, creating depth without disrupting the overall sense of calm. Continuous timber wall treatments, cabinetry and ceiling elements give the interiors a strong architectural presence and establish visual continuity between different areas of the home.

Furniture has been selected and proportioned in response to the scale of the American residence. Generous sofas, lounge seating and dining pieces comfortably occupy the expansive rooms without overwhelming them. Rather than simply filling large spaces, the furniture helps establish more intimate zones for conversation, relaxation and dining, creating a human scale within the broader architectural volume.

The palette avoids relying on overt tropical motifs. Instead, whites, warm neutrals, natural timber and deeper brown tones form a restrained foundation, complemented by textiles, artwork, greenery and carefully placed decorative objects. Light upholstery against darker architectural elements creates a confident yet balanced contrast, giving the home a relaxed sense of refinement.

The kitchen and dining areas continue the same material language. Dark cabinetry, generous work surfaces and warm timber details establish a strong visual framework, while simplified furniture and lighting maintain a sense of openness. Formal dining, casual dining and kitchen functions each retain their own character while remaining connected through consistent materials and tones.

More private and specialised spaces — including the study, media room, bathrooms and wine room — introduce additional layers to the residence. The study adopts a deeper timber palette to create a quieter and more intimate atmosphere, while the bathrooms combine clean lines, expansive stone surfaces and warm wood details to evoke the comfort of a private resort. The wine room takes on a darker, more immersive character, giving the collection its own distinctive setting within the home.

Rather than reproducing a single established style, the project responds to the climate, scale and lifestyle of West Palm Beach. The ease of tropical resort living, the openness of contemporary residential design and the grounded character of classic American interiors are brought together in a cohesive whole.

The result is a home that feels expansive without becoming impersonal, and richly layered without excess. Natural materials, generously scaled furniture, carefully organised spaces and a strong indoor-outdoor relationship create an atmosphere that is relaxed, composed and distinctly connected to its South Florida setting.
