Project Narrative01

Located in Melbourne, Australia, this approximately 10,000 sq ft detached residence explores the balance between the architectural language of classic American interiors and a more restrained contemporary approach. Through proportion, colour, furniture and styling, traditional and modern elements are brought together to create a home defined by contrast without losing visual coherence.

A predominantly dark and composed palette establishes the character of the interior. Deep-toned walls, clean cabinetry and classically proportioned wall and ceiling details provide a strong architectural framework. Against this backdrop, the furniture takes on a more simplified and contemporary expression, avoiding the visual weight often associated with traditional American interiors. The contrast between structured architectural detailing and cleaner furniture forms gives the home a distinctly current sensibility.

Layered accessories play an important role throughout the residence. Artwork, books, sculptural objects, decorative pieces and lighting are carefully integrated into shelving, cabinetry and wall compositions, bringing personality and a sense of lived-in richness to the rooms. Metallic lighting, geometric rugs and occasional sculptural furniture introduce additional texture and visual rhythm, creating points of focus within the darker interior palette.

The living areas and study embrace a deeper, more intimate atmosphere, where extensive shelving and collected objects reinforce the private residential character of the home. In the bedrooms, the composition becomes quieter and more restrained, using simplified furniture arrangements and softer textiles to create a calmer environment. The dressing room and bathrooms continue the darker material language while adopting cleaner lines and more contemporary lighting, maintaining continuity across different areas of the residence.

Rather than reproducing a single established style, the project brings together two distinct design languages. The proportion, order and decorative character of classic American interiors are retained, while the clarity and restraint of contemporary design give them a new context. The result is a residence that feels layered without being excessive, sophisticated without becoming formal, and equally grounded in tradition and modern living.
